What Is a Magnetic Filter?
A magnetic filter is a filtration device that uses the power of a strong magnet to remove iron particles.
There are various types of filters; ranging from large devices to more compact ones, and smaller filters that can be attached to piping which are called micromags. Simply passing liquid through a magnetic filter removes particles that react to the magnetic force, and the filter does not need to be replaced as is the case with ordinary filters.
Economical in that there are no consumable parts, these filters are useful in a variety of situations.
Uses of Magnetic Filters
Magnetic filters are mainly used to remove iron particles contained in industrial wastewater.
For example; lubricating fluids used during polishing operations and cleaning fluids produced when washing products may contain minute metal particles such as iron contaminants. If these minute particles are left untreated, they can damage the product or lead to machine breakdowns.
Especially when high-precision cutting is required or when surfaces are polished without irregularities, magnetic filters must be used to remove contamination.
Features of Magnetic Filters
Magnetic filters have the following three main features:
- Capable of Removing Minute Particles
Fine particles that are difficult to filter with ordinary filters can be removed. In the case of iron particles, we have succeeded in filtering even those as minute as a few microns or less.
- Running Cost Is Almost Zero
Unlike ordinary filters, magnetic filters do not require filter replacement. Since there are no consumable parts that become clogged with contamination and have to be discarded, the running cost is low and the filter is environmentally friendly. On the other hand, iron debris attached to the magnet must be removed periodically. Such maintenance is necessary because the filter does not need to be replaced, but some magnetic filters are fully automated for cleaning.
- No Pressure Drop
Due to their structure, magnetic filters rarely cause a pressure drop. This is because the flow path is maintained even if the iron particles adhere to the magnets and the flow of liquid is not blocked.
